The Mohammedan Ethics
“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” (The Holy Quran 33:21)
It has been narrated from Imam Hussain (PBUH), narrating from his father, Amir al-Moumenin (PBUH) depicting Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH&HP) way of life.
“…whenever the Prophet (PBUH&HP) returned back to his house he divided his time in three. One part was devoted to the worship of Allah (SWT); one part was devoted to other people, and one other part to himself. In the part that was devoted to himself, he shared his time with others too, giving orders to his loyal friends and governing the public affairs, and did not earn much time for his personal affairs.
During this time, among his daily schedule, in governance of the Ummah, he used to put the pious and virtuous in priority, and according to their virtues he educated them, helped them with satisfying their needs and doing their tasks and supporting them. People came to him to get educated in the religion, and did not leave until their souls were full of knowledge and wisdom.”
“…The Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HP) did not speak unless for necessity, and he was friendly with people in a humble way, and he never bothered them. He always had a smile on his face, and did not make a frown. He asked about the absent from the present, and asked about the people’s situation, and he championed every good deed and discouraged every vice; he was a moderate person. He did not neglect any ignorance or divergence of the Muslims, and moved according justice, no more, no less. He preferred among his companions the one who was more concerned for the Muslims, and regarded the values of them according to their support for the Muslims.”
“…He was always good-tempered, and never used to shout and show violence or swear or look for the people’s weaknesses or use words of praise. In facing what he did not prefer he did not react by showing dislike in his face, therefore people did not shy to offer him their suggestions. He did not discourage the hopefuls. He avoided three things: from impulsive reasoning, talkativeness, and useless words.
“…He did not socialize unless with the remembrance of Allah, and he never chose a special place for himself to sit. He discouraged this behavior. He used to sit wherever there was a space. He acted perfectly toward all others so that no one ever felt that the Prophet preferred someone else to him. No one returned with an empty hand after asking something from him. When he could not answer the needs he justified it and made the asker contented. He was so nice that others imagined him as their kind father. In his presence there was always temperance, trust, piety, and the voices never raised high, and the dignity of the people was always respected.”
He also avoided three things toward the people: he never blamed the people and remind them with their wrong actions. Second, he never sought to find out the mistakes and weaknesses of the people, and thirdly he did not speak unless there was a hope for a virtue.”1
